I hate to fall out with Graham Jones of Rox (Rescue Oxford) (Oxford Mail, January 14) as we all have the best interests of Oxford at heart.

Reopening High Street to all traffic would be a disaster for Oxford and reduce the city centre to gridlock.

Rox advocates lifting the traffic ban in High Street during the so-called off-peak. Alas, that is exactly when the congestion is often at its worst.

It is then that delivery vehicles and a whole miscellany of vans and cars clog the route and delay the traffic that is legitimately entitled to use the route.

Ironically, allowing a free-for-all in High Street might even add to congestion in Abingdon Road, and in the whole of the city centre, as traffic heads down St Aldate's to find somewhere to park.

Oxford's bus network, especially the park-and-ride services, are recognised throughout the country as examples of how to get a large number of people, shoppers included, into the city centre with comfort and ease.

Hardly a month goes by without a delegation coming to see how Oxford has tackled the traffic issues.

But then, as the saying goes, "a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country". Nigel Eggleton, Commercial Director, Oxford Bus Company
