Former Witney Roadrunner Mathew Ashton returned from university to land an impressive victory in the senior men's event at the Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships at St Hugh's School, Carswell.

Ashton, who was running in his club colours of Aldershot, Farnham & District, comfortably outpaced Reading Roadrunner Sam Alridge for the title.

It was his first race in Oxfordshire for two years, and he has now won the Oxfordshire Championship at every age group from under 11 to senior men.

He clocked 32mins 47secs over the undualting 9km course, with Aldridge finishing in 33.15.

Martin Bishop, representing Oxford University AC was third, clocking 33.25.

There was a clean sweep for Oxford City in all three masters' competitions.

Steve Male took the vet 40 prize, finishing fifth overall in 33.43, while John Exley (20th in 37.51) landed the vet 50 crown.

Dickie Langton completed the treble for City with victory in the vet 60 race, finishing 60th overall in 45.05.

Gareth Petts, from Witney Roadrunners, was first in the under 20 men's race, clocking 41.42.

Headington Roadrunners won both the senior and masters' team competitions.

In the senior ladies' event, the White Horse Harriers' duo of Josephine Rhodes and Frances Briscoe landed a one-two.

Rhodes crossed the line in 24.48 to secure the gold medal, with her clubmate Briscoe clocking 25.20 on the 7km course. Radley's Lorna King took bronze in 25.51.

The under 20 ladies' champion was Abingdon Ambler Laura-Jane Chisnall, who recorded 28.16.

Other age group winners were Michelle Buzzard, who won the vet 35 race in 26.25, while Gwyneth Hueter (Oxford City) was first home in the vet 45 category, crossing the line in 27.28.

Hilary O'Shea (Abingdon Amblers) took the honours in the vet 55 contest, clocking 30.00, while Hook Norton's Kay Sole won the vet 65 race in 44.51.

Headington Roadrunners won the senior team title with Abingdon Amblers netting the masters' title.

In the junior age groups, Daniel Griffiths (Radley) led the way by winning the under 17 race in 23.56.

He proved just too strong for Woodstock's John Ewbank, who was seven seconds adrift, with Abingdon's Steve Copley finishing third in 24.12.

St Edward's School won the team prize.

Alice Gunn (Banbury Harriers) secured the under 17 ladies' title in 27.15, with Hayley Chaundy (Oxford City) finishing second in 27.36 and Livvy Napier (Lord Williams's School, Thame) third in 28.39.

Radley also bagged both the under 13 and 15 boys' team prizes.

In the under 15 race, Radley's Rhys Glastonbury won in 13.43 from teammate Samuel Miller (14.11), with Oxford City's Aaron Simpson third in 14.22.

And there was a clean sweep for Radley in the under 13 event, thanks to Samuel Parish, George Miller and Alistair Duff, who broke the tape in 12.05, 12.10 and 12.26 respectively.

Bea Swords brought home the under 15 girls' honours for Oxford City with a time of 12.04 - some 30 seconds ahead of Radley's Emma Grant.

She was six seconds ahead of third-placed Banbury Harrier Sophie Tyers, who helped her team to the team prize.

Another classy performance by Oxford City's Melissa Hawtin in the under 13 girls' race gave her a comfortable victory in 11.35.

Her teammates Beth Swords (12.48) and Danielle Anderson (12.58) finished second and third to help wrap up the team title.

It was encouraging to see more than 60 youngsters enjoying their participation in the under 11 boys and girls categories.

In the boys' race Abingdon Ambler Daniel Stainthorp (2.49) outsprinted William Handscome (2.57) of Oxford City over a shortened course of 800 metres, with Sebastian Perry (3.08) of St. Hugh's School coming third.

In the girls' race over a similar distance,Connie McMillan representing Banbury Harriers, clocked 2.58 to beat Oxford City pair Lauren Hawtin (3.02) and Jessica Anstice (3.12).
