The Princess Royal was in Oxford last night Thursday to open a fundraising evening for Opportunity International.

The city charity helps create jobs in 25 of the world's poorest countries, by giving out small scale loans so locals can set themselves up in business.

More than 250 people attended the event at St Aldate's Church, where Princess Anne, who is the charity's patron, accepted a cheque for £5,000 from pupils from St Edwards School.

St Aldate's Rector Charlie Cleverly said to the Princess: "We're delighted to have you here.

"We're so looking forward to hearing about Opportunity International empowering the poor by giving them access to capital, which is a kind of strategy that we're so impressed by as a church in the heart of this university city. We're committed to serving the poor."

The Princess is pictured being greeted at Pembroke College on her arrival in the city.

The Duke of Edinburgh was due to open new student accommodation today (Friday) at St Catherine's College, Oxford.
