A doorman who lost two pints of blood after being glassed by a customer in a bar has told how he is still living with the consequences of the assault.

Richard Newman, 32, of Burford Road, Minster Lovell, was jailed for three years and nine months at Oxford Crown Court last Thursday for his assault on doorman Kenneth Bryan.

The vicious attack at Nortons Cafe Bar, in Langdale Walk, Witney, was captured on CCTV late on a Saturday night in February.

Father-of-two Mr Bryan, 39, from Bartholomew Road, Oxford, said: "I'm still getting headaches from it, it still feels tender. It's part of the job really -- you're always getting attacked -- it's one of those things.

"I've given it up now for the moment. I'm taking some time out because of this, and my wife and kids don't like me doing it."

Newman attacked Mr Bryan as the doorman attempted to break up a fight in the busy town centre bar. He shattered a glass over his head, badly cutting his own hand at the same time.

The confrontation then spilled out into the street where Newman and another man, who later received a caution, continued to assault Mr Bryan.

Newman and his accomplice were captured on CCTV as they ran from the scene pursued by police, into the town's Market Square where they were arrested. Mr Bryan was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he was given stitches and released after about eight hours.

Mr Bryan said: "It was about 12 o'clock, I was taking someone outside for causing trouble when about three people jumped on me and he came at me from behind with a glass.

"He swung his arm right round and the glass shattered. A, at the time I thought he had thrown it at me.

"We fell out of the fire door and I had hold of him with his jumper over his head. I tried to hold on to him, but I had a radio in my hand and he got away."

Mr Bryan was working for R&R Frontline Security in Oxford, which supplies door staff to Nortons.

Bar owner Mark Wates said the attack had changed Mr Bryan. He said: "Kenny is such a nice man, but he's not the same character -- he's really jumpy now. It has affected everybody.

"I can't believe something like this happened, let alone in my bar. We're glad about the sentence and hopefully it's a warning to the mindless minority who ruin it for everybody else."

Dc Jim Holmes, of Witney CID, said: "This footage shows the ferocity and the intent behind the assault, although it does not show just how serious the injuries caused were.

"This sentence should send a strong message to those who want to engage in disorder when they're on a night out -- they will be brought to justice."
