OPPONENTS have criticised Oxfordshire County Council for approving plans for a fifth park-and-ride near Kidlington.

The proposed 1,000- space car park between Kidlington and north Oxford will now be the subject of a public inquiry, possibly in July.

The county council and Oxford City Council back the plans to build on Green Belt land, but there have been hundreds of objections from local people.

They protest that the development will fill in the narrow strip of open space between Oxford and Kidlington, and that it will cause major pollution and traffic congestion.

Carl Smith, clerk to Gosford and Water Eaton parish council, said: "It creates a lot more traffic through the village of Gosford and our side of Kidlington.

"We strongly support the Green Belt, there's only a very small gap between north Oxford and Kidlington and this reduces it by at least a quarter."

Roger Williams, the county council's chief transport planner, said engineers had looked at ten possible sites before settling on the one off the A4165.
