Oxford United's young side, including four YTS lads, did well to keep the score down to four against a star-studded Tottenham outfit worth over £25m.

Spurs included Frode Grodas, David Howells, John Scales, Jose Dominguez, Dean Austin, Steffen Iversen, Les Ferdinand and Darren Anderton in their side for last night's rearranged Avon Insurance Combination game at Orient's Brisbane Road.

Yet, incredibly, but for two glaring misses, United might have been two goals up early on.

Brian Wilsterman somehow missed from three yards out and then Simon Weatherstone put a header past the post with Grodas beaten.

Tottenham took the lead with an own goal from Andrew Rose, who sliced a clearance into his net at the near post, but they held Spurs to only 1-0 at half-time.

United's cause was not helped with Mark Angel going off ill at half-time. But in the second half, Tottenham's class began to tell and both Ferdinand and Anderton found the target. Spurs also hit the woodwork six times!

"I've got nothing but praise for my young side," said Oxford United assistant manager Mark Harrison.

United Res: Jackson, Rose, Powell, Lewis, Wilsterman, Whelan, Folland (J Shepheard 60), S Shepperd (Brennan 75), Wright, Angel (Davies 45), S Weather-stone.
