Are Tories ready for a comeback? THE question this year in Oxford's local elections is whether or not the Conservatives can re-establish a presence on the city council.

The Tories have had no city councillors in Oxford since 1996, when they were wiped out across the city, and they are anxious to re-establish a presence on the council, where the Labour group has had a majority since 1980.

There will be elections to 17 seats on May 7. At the moment, the Greens hold one of those seats, the Lib Dems three and Labour 13.

The overall political balance on the city council is Labour 37, Lib Dem 11, and Greens three. The Labour majority was greater until last September, when the party suffered two by-election defeats, both to the Lib Dems, and hung on to another seat by just one vote.

Lib Dem candidate Jeremy Wynne, who so nearly defeated Labour in West ward six months ago, is standing for another of the ward's three seats again this year.

Sitting Labour councillor Valerie Harris is not running for re-election there.

Labour councillors are also standing down in Risinghurst, Littlemore, Marston and St Clements. Lib Dem Dr Robert Gasser is not standing for re-election in Wolvercote, where his party holds all three seats at the moment. * denotes sitting councillor
