THE richest man in the country, the Duke of Westminster, has been fined for speeding.

Gerald Cavendish, of Eaton Hall, Eaton, Chester, was caught by speed cameras doing 98mph at 1.15pm on the M40 at Lewknor, near Watlington, on March 1.

He pleaded guilty in a letter to Thame Magistrates' Court. Magistrates fined him £360 and ordered him to pay £35 costs.

His clean licence now has five penalty points on it.

If the 46-year-old Duke had been travelling 2mph faster, he would have qualified for an almost automatic driving ban of up to 21 days.

In his letter, the Duke said he "apologised unreservedly" to the court.

He said he was driving home after a morning in London and the traffic on the M40 was light. The hearing in his absence took less than three minutes.
