Three teenagers, whose car crashed into a cornfield on their way home from the Glastonbury Festival, are lucky to be alive, say police.

Tony Pemberton, 18, John Matthews, 17, and Tarrick Ewens, 17, all from the Aylesbury area, were released from the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, yesterday.

One teenager was thrown from the car during the accident, which happened on the northbound carriageway of the A34, just south of the Marcham Interchange, Abingdon, on Sunday night.

The Vauxhall Nova, being driven by Mr Pemberton, crashed through a wooden railing into a cornfield. A second had to be freed from the wrecked Vauxhall Nova by the fire service and ambulances took all three to the hospital. All suffered spinal injuries although none of the injuries were considered life-threatening

Pc Chris Hulme, of Witney traffic police, who was called out to the scene, said: "They were all extremely lucky." It could have been a lot worse."
