THE manager of Oxford City athlete Carl Afilaka is threatening to take legal action against the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee.

The sprinter arrived In Malaysia to represent his country in last month's Commonwealth Games, but was told when he got there the deadline had passed for registration.

Afilaka's manager, Geoffrey Roberts, claims he received a telephone call from the Caribbean saying that if Afilaka was fit and able to fly out, then he could represent his country in Kuala Lumpur.

"Carl was ready and fit to run and able to travel, all he didn't have was the money to transport him over there," Roberts declared.

"I told them that I would come up with the money for the air ticket, provided that they repay me."

Afilaka, who works for the probation service based in Aylesbury, obtained five days' leave and flew out from Heathrow on Sunday, September 13.

"When I arrived I was informed that I had missed the deadline for declaration, which was the previous day and I wasn't allowed to compete."

Both the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and the country's National Amateur Athletics Association refute claims that Afilaka was selected.
