School buses were ordered off the road after a police spot check, writes David Horne.

The operators of three vehicles were issued with notices banning their use until serious defects were put right.

The checks were carried out yesterday as coaches and minibuses arrived at schools in the Witney, Eynsham and Burford areas.

Two of the three vehicles have already been rectified, according to the county council's education department. The third, privately hired by Burford School parents, has been served an immediate prohibition notice.

Sgt Alan Penny, of Witney police traffic department, said: "The majority of coaches checked were in good condition.

"But it is of some concern that serious defects were found on a few of the vehicles.

"This only highlights the need to carry out these checks."

Police have not named the owners. A total of 33 vehicles from eight companies were shepherded to a check site at Carterton Road, Brize Norton, after their morning drop-off. Officers from the police traffic department, department of transport and schools transport office were involved in the safety checks.

The most serious faults were found in steering components and suspension. Only 16 of the vehicles were fault free - less than half.

Another 14 had minor defects and the operators were issued with notices to put them right.

Similar lightning checks are to be made in other areas of the county.
