WITNEY Town's record-breaking goalscorer Carl Henry has gone on trial at Oxford United - and is set to play for the reserves against Gillingham at the Manor Ground tonight (7.30).

The 26-year-old marksman was among five triallists who trained with United yesterday.

And afterwards, United's caretaker-manager Mickey Lewis, who has been put in temporary charge following the dismissal of Malcolm Shotton, gave Henry the thumbs-up.

Lewis said: "He did quite well and looked bright. I didn't know anything about any of these triallists coming in until last night, but we are going to have a look at them."

Henry, who has also been watched by Cheltenham, Reading and Crystal Palace, set a new record for Witney when scoring in nine successive games this term.

The leading scorer in the Dr Martens League Eastern Division with 11 goals, he has also netted six times in cup competitions. Witney manager Andy Lyne, who snapped up Henry from AFC Wallingford in the summer after he scored over 100 goals in two seasons there, said: "As far as I am concerned we won't stand in his way if the chance comes along.

"We would encourage all our people to play at the highest level."

Henry will be looking to add to his tally when he plays for Witney at home to Fisher Athletic on Saturday.
