TRANSFER deadline day dawned at Oxford United with manager Denis Smith hoping to bring in a player on loan - while at the same time holding on to the ones he's already got, writes Russell Smith.

With defender Christian Edwards returning to Nottingham Forest following his month's loan, Smith has until 5pm today to add a new face to his relegation-threatened squad.

"There is work to be done and I might be bringing somebody in - I cannot see anyone going out," he said.

"With Christan Edwards having gone back, that gives me the possibility of bringing a loan player in and I am making inquiries."

The manager would not be drawn on the identity of his target, but it is thought to be a front player.

Smith's supposition that no-one will be leaving the Manor is welcome news for United fans, with left back Paul Powell being linked with a host of clubs.

United have just turned down a £300,000 bid from West Brom for the 21-year-old, who is also reported to be attracting the attention of Newcastle and West Ham.

Meanwhile, Smith believes that United need four wins from their last eight games to beat the drop from Division 2.

Tuesday's crucial last-gasp 2-1 victory at Bury hauled United out of the relegation zone. It was further evidence of how United's away form - it was their sixth success this term on opposition territory - differs vastly from their home results which have seen them win just four times and lose 11.

Centre back Phil Whelan said: "I can't understand it really. It is just that we seem to play nervously at home. It should be the other way round with our supporters there."

Looking forward to Saturday's trip to face fellow strugglers Cambridge United, he added: "It is a massive game. If we can win there we will pull a couple of points away from the relegation zone."
