OXfordshire virtually secured their place in the quarter-finals in the Tetley's Bitter County Championship when they made it two emphatic wins out of two in South Pool 2 at Bournemouth.

The visitors produced a performance that matched the glorious weather, scoring eight tries and seven conversions without reply. Pride of place went to Mat Maudsley with a personal tally of 29 points.

With Sussex beating Kent 27-22 in the other Pool 2 game, Oxon can look forward to a likely quarter-final meeting with reigning champions Cornwall at Redruth on Saturday, May 13. Oxon can afford to lose to Sussex by 57 points at Banbury this Saturday when many of their Henley players will be involved in a league match against Rotherham and still top the pool.

Dorset & Wilts proved no match for the power, pace and skills of the visitors.

With their pack dominating from the outset, Oxfordshire scored four tries in the opening 22 minutes through wingers Maudsley and David Knight, fly half Ben Tubb and flanker Willie Phillips.

Pete Davies, an inspiration at full back rather than his usual position on the wing, scored a try in injury time. Maudsley kicked four conversions to give the visitors a half-time lead of 33 points.

Oxon scored within 40 seconds of the restart for the second half, Maudsley racing 50 metres down the left wing for a try.

The winger repeated the score ten minutes later. When Davies went over for his second try and Maudsley added his third conversion of the half, Oxon were 54-0 ahead with 30 minutes still to play. The final quarter was played with all Oxon's replacements on the field, but resolute defence prevented any further score.

Mark Venner was stretchered off with a neck injury before half-time. He rejoined the team later with thankfully only a neck strain.
