MIDFIELDER Simon Abercrombie, widely regarded as Witney Town's player of the year, has been sacked by the Dr Martens League club on the eve of today's final game of the season, writes RUSSELL SMITH.

Chairman Brian Constable said that Abercrombie had been dismissed for failing to turn up for Witney's clash with Dartford a week last Thursday, and for making himself unavailable for Wednesday's trip to Hastings.

Constable said: "No-one is more important than the club. This club has 100 years of history and I am making a point that no player dictates terms to the club."

Abercrombie, who was on a one-year contract, was fined two weeks wages for failing to turn up for the Dartford game.

And Constable added: "He has admitted to me that he has been approached by another club. I cannot name the club, but it has been reported to the Football Association."

Constable claimed that under FA Rule 16, Witney had the right of a transfer fee for Abercrombie, whom he valued at 5,000.

Oxford City, where former Witney boss Andy Lyne is the assistant manager, are expected to lead the chase for Abercrombie.
