Businesses in Oxfordshire will play an integral role in a nationwide week of events that will give companies practical advice on how to adopt innovative practices, writes David Duffy.

The week-long 'Celebration of Innovation is being organised in partnership with the Innovation Unit at the Department of Trade and Industry.

It will showcase all forms of innovation and encourage companies to innovate more, especially in the marketing, design and delivery of their products or services.

As an integral part of the Celebration, the Didcot-based Rutherford Appleton Laboratory will be screening an interactive national debate, being broadcast at 6pm tomorrow (May 9) from the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford. The debate will be led by Lord Puttnam, chairman of Enigma Productions and Oscar-winning film producer, whose credits include Chariots of Fire and The Killing Fields.

In addition to the screening of the debate there will be also several other events across Oxfordshire, including:

* Wednesday - INPUT national meeting - engineers and educators will meet at the Oxford Centre for Innovation

* Thursday - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot - fun hands-on science event at which local school children will 'explore' molecules

* Thursday - The Oxford Trust - anniversary lecture entitled 'Innovation in Trust'

* Friday - Young Engineers for Britain, Lawn Upton Middle School - regional heat, nine and ten year-olds will be building an innovative flying machine with help from engineers.
