Talks will be taking place all this week to decide who will run Oxford city.

Political groups have organised a series of meetings to thrash out a deal after Oxford City Council was left in limbo when Labour lost its power following last week's elections.

The Greens, who now have eight seats, have already held talks with the Liberal Democrats, who have an equal 21 with Labour.

They plan further meetings on Thursday and Friday while Labour was expected to finalise its position later today. Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Corinna Redman said: "Nothing will be decided until at least the end of the week.

Our hope is that we will be able to form some sort of administration but exactly how that will work, we are not sure."

Green spokesman Cllr Mike Woodin said they wanted to have their councillors chairing committees.

He said: "We have to have a constructive look at who will sit on what committees. We have a strong voice on the council and we are not prepared to be some sort of junior coalition partner." An agreement has to be finalised by the annual council meeting on May 18.

Labour lost its 20-year control of the council in the May 4 elections and also lost its leader John Tanner.
