CAR prices are coming down in the UK, but it still pays to shop abroad according to a new survey by What Car? magazine, writes David Duffy.

The magazine saved 500,000 shopping for 100 best-selling cars in the UK's biggest ever survey of European dealers and import brokers.

The What Car? Guide to Buying Abroad shows that thousands of pounds can be saved on a new car by hopping over the Channel.

What Car? Editor Steve Fowler says: "We're now seeing car prices falling slowly in the UK, but our survey shows thata shopping abroad is still the best way to save serious cash and it's not hard to do."

The biggest saving achieved was a whopping 13,155 off the British-built Jaguar XK8 from a French dealership. Other savings included 4,156 off a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec in Belgium, while 4, 010 was slashed from the price of a Volkswagen Passat 1.8S by calling a Dutch dealer.

"Many people are put off buying abroad because they think it's going to be complicated," says Fowler. "But many of our readers have followed our advice and saved thousands."
