Long before New Labour, Sir Winston Churchill made the soundbite his own, as Kay Halle shows in The Irrepressible Churchill (Robson Books, 9.99).
Halle, a US journalist, spent 30 years in frequent company with Churchill and her collection of his contemporaries' stories and impressions of the great man, plus newspaper cartoons and his own sayings, is reprinted this month.
If you have a little longer to spare, Martin Gilbert's masterful one-volume biography Churchill: A Life (Pimlico, 15), generally reckoned to be the best and most vivid portrait, has also been reprinted in paperback
