Motorists with older cars who decide to update their in-car audio systems should take a look at their insurance cover. They may find their expensive new sound system is not fully covered by their existing policy, according to insuremythings.com.

Figures from the Association of British Insurers show that over 25 per cent of enthusiasts who choose to upgrade their in-car audio spend more than 175 on the latest systems.

This may push them over the top of their cover, which was probably fixed several years ago.

Sandy Dunn, of insuremythings.com said: Although new cars that are fitted with audio equipment on the production line will automatically be covered by their insurance company if the system is stolen, some insurers will put a limit on the cover provided for stereos that have been fitted later on.

He said the best advice for motorists was to check their insurance cover before changing the car stereo.

They should also keep receipts for any new in-car equipment fitted.
