Sir Derek Jacobi will be appearing at the Oxford Playhouse from Monday in Hugh Whitemore's controversial new play God Only Knows, which is a Triumph Proscenium production.
Hugh Whitemore's credits include a considerable number of television plays and film adaptations, including 84 Charing Cross Road, and Jane Eyre. His association with Jacobi goes back to 1986 when Jacobi starred in his stage play Breaking The Code.
Jacobi first shot to fame for his role in television's I Claudius. Since then he has worked his way through most of the great Shakespearean roles, including Hamlet, which was staged at the Apollo Theatre in 1977.
God Only Knows is set in Tuscany, where a stranger shatters four holiday makers' evening by claiming to possess long-hidden knowledge that is both momentous and dangerous. It concerns an enigma involving the Vatican's 'secret archive', an Italian dealer in antiques and a Jewish preacher known as Yeshua Ben Pantera. The answer to this riddle gives us the play's title God Only Knows.
