The new Volkswagen Passat TDI PD 130 horsepower has been named Car of the Year 2001 and Family Car of the Year by Diesel Car magazine.

Volkswagen has now been the manufacturer of the Car of the Year for two consecutive years, and the award brings to three the total number of Diesel Car overall car of the year titles it has won since the accolades began in 1995. No other manufacturer has ever won more than once. Diesel Car was impressed by the Passat TDI PD 130's mechanical refinement and 'exuberant power delivery'. It praised Volkswagen's revolutionary PD (Pumpe Dse) technology and added: 'Volkswagen has taken a thoroughly winning formula and fine-honed it to near perfection."

The new 130 horsepower 1.9-litre TDI PD unit made its debut in the Volkswagen range in January when it was introduced in the new Passat.

It uses the same technology that carried the three-cylinder Polo TDI PD to glory in the Diesel Car Car of the Year awards last year.

Volkswagen first won the Diesel Car Car of the Year title in 1997 with the Passat TDI 110. Last year saw the Polo TDI PD claim the award, while the Golf GT TDI PD won the performance category.
