Young lifesavers swept the board in the Royal Life Saving Society's Thames Valley branch annual pairs incident competition.

Competitors - some as young as seven - from Abingdon, Wantage, Milton Keynes and Bracknell took part in the competition at Radley College.

They had to demonstrate their skills in rescues and first aid. The two teams representing the town were Abingdon Scouts Rookies and the Abingdon Aqua Lifesaving Club.

First place winners were Thomas Hodson and William Owen of the Rookies (under-tens) and Amy Higgs and Allanor Jenkins-Strong from the Young Lifesavers' Club (11-14-year-olds).

Winning second place awards were Bradley Walters and Richard Cockbill (Rookies) and in third place were Holly Wyatt and Louise Cockbill (Rookies), Michael Booth and Jason Harrop (Young Lifesavers) and Gabrielle Bunn and Catherine Cetnik also with Young Lifesavers.

They were coached by Gill Higgs and Terrie Jenkins. Mrs Jenkins said: "This is their reward for all the hard work, dedication and teamwork during the last 12 months."
