Witney Roadrunners' young athletes made an excellent start in the opening Oxfordshire Junior League meeting at Tilsey Park, Abingdon on Saturday, setting five national standards, nine club records and 42 personal bests.

The club were the dominant force in the boys match, finishing 30 points clear of Abingdon.

Under 17 athletes Giray Ketenci and Mathew Ashton continued the record-breaking form when gaining national standards and club bests in the long jump (5.81m) and 1500m (4.21.1) respectively.

Ashley Bull was another long jumper in form, also setting records and standards when winning the under 15 event with a leap of 5.46m. Sam Benfield won the boys' under nine 150m race in 25.7.

In the under 13 girls match, Carly Milward and Claire Triggs both gained national standards and club records.

Milward threw 7.05m in the shot and Triggs gained her record while winning the 200m in 28.7secs.

Gemma Byrne and Elysia Ridley won both the A and B string under 15s' 75m hurdles, while Victoria Smith won the under 11s 80m sprint in 12.3secs.

Radley Ladies youngsters smashed three competition records as the club won the girls event.

Rose Cormack Lloyd broke the league's under 17 1500m record with a time of 5 mins 27.0 secs, while Natalie Plateau leaped to a long jump record of 5.40m.

Then Plateau teamed up with Sam Ahmet, Molly Russell and Rachel Brenton to break the record for the 4x100m relay with a time of 51.8secs.

Also in the Under 17 age group, Radley's Sam Molyneux broke the javlin club record with throw of 29.14m.

In all, the Radley competitors set 14 personal bests as the club finished 73 points ahead of runners-up Abingdon.

Exel Gosford recorded a win for their under 11 girls and broke two league records - Mathew Smith in the under 13 boys' high jump at 1.47m, and Harriette Cooke in the under 9 girls' standing long jump at 1.62m.

The second round of the league takes place at Horspath Road track, Oxford, on Wednesday, June 13 (6.30).
