Thame is stepping up the pressure to make sure it keeps an old people's home in the town.

Meadowcroft will have to be rebuilt in the near future to comply with EU standards.

The town council wants it rebuilt on its present site on the junction of Queens Road and Towersey Drive.

The Oxfordshire County Council-owned home, with its 50 residents, is not in the first wave of improvements planned when the county's homes are privatised. Priorities will be in Banbury, Didcot and Wallingford.

General purposes committee chairman Paul Gleeson said: "Rebuilding may not take place for several years.

"But we must keep up the pressure to get the home developed and have both residential and nursing care there."

County council member Diana Ludlow told the committee: "Thame has not been forgotten. But the priorities are in the other towns at the moment."
