Future town mayors in Thame will have to organise their own civic ball with volunteers. Council staff will no longer be available to help.
The decision was taken by the town council's finance committee after members heard this year's ball ate up more than £500 of staff time.
And the District Auditor, the watchdog on local government pending, says the mayor's ball is a charity event and should not be backed by council tax payers' money.
