The all-conquering rhythms of The Drummers of Burundi have been cited as inspirational to The Clash, Echo & The Bunnymen, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Malcolm McLaren, writes Chris Gray.

Yet these master drummers from the tiny country of Burundi almost at the very heart of Africa, rarely travel abroad or tour and the making and playing of these drums remains a privilege that can only be handed down from father to son.

Live in concert the Drummers of Burundi are a spectacle of music and dance. Full of energy, grace and pure athleticism, the 12-strong troupe, traditionally dressed in colourful robes, hammer out compelling rhythms and complex syncopations while leaping, dancing, singing, or even fighting imaginary foes over their drums.

The huge drums are made from hollowed-out tree trunks, covered in animal skins. The trunks come from a tree which only grows in the centre of Burundi, and the Drummers plant seeds of these trees in the hope that future generations will be able to continue the traditions of drum-making.

But it has not always been a harmonious existence for the Drummers.

During the terrible conflicts of the past decade between the Hutus and the Tutsis, six members died.

For their last visit to the UK, they had to trek from Burundi in Central Africa, through Rwanda and Uganda and back again, simply to obtain UK visas. This time, though, things have happily been less arduous.

For tonight's Apollo concert, The Spirit of Africa, they are joined by South African trio Tannanas in support, with mbira (thumb piano) master musician Chartwell Dutiro.

The show starts at 8pm and tickets - from £20 to £7 - are available from 0870 7500659 or online at www.musicatoxford.com
