BUDDING coaches Adam Claydon and Clare Mattingley, from King Alfred's Community and Sports College in Wantage, have received recognition for their efforts to promote sport in the community.

Claydon, 17, and Mattingley, 18, were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year by the college at its annual award ceremony.

And British Olympic hockey player Callum Giles - one of the world's top goal scorers - was on hand to present the trophies.

Claydon, from Grove, and Mattingley, of Wantage, are graduates of the government-backed Youth Sport Trust Millennium Volunteer programme.

The 18-month scheme involved the students spending up to 200 hours coaching local primary schoolchildren as part of efforts to get more youngsters involved in sport.

Simon Spires, the college's director of PE, said: "They are excellent role models and this recognises their personal success and the contribution they have made towards sport in the community."

He added: "The college prides itself on its attitude to sport. We try to make PE more accessible to people, helping them feel better about joining in, and events like this are critical. It is important to celebrate success. To have someone of an international level to praise them is excellent."
