South Oxfordshire District Council members have given themselves a 30 per cent pay increase.
The allowances, recommended by a panel independent of the council, mean members should receive a minimum of £1,600 a year.
People with special responsibilities, such as the council leader, members of the Cabinet and chairmen of committees will receive more.
Accepting the increases, Conservative leader Ann Ducker said: "We do not come into it for the money but to serve our community.
"These recommended increases are very sensible."
They were recommended by a panel chaired by Gill Bindoff, chairman of Lewknor parish council, and also consisted of David Slade, a senior partner in a firm of Wallingford solicitors, David Hawkins, president of Didcot Chamber of Commerce and Errol Facy, chairman of the Henley Partnership.
On top of the basic allowance, the leader of the council, Jan Morgan, will receive £8,000, Cabinet members £4,000 each, the chairman of the scrutiny committee - Ann Ducker - £4,000 and the chairmen of other committees £1,600.
Members of parish and town councils in south Oxfordshire will not receive any money.
