Another village post office in Oxfordshire is threatened with closure.

The counter service at Radley, near Abingdon, will cease in September unless a buyer can be found within six weeks.

Paul Taylor and Ann FarrThe business has been run for the last 17 years by Ann Farr, helped by her partner Paul Taylor, a former policeman, but now they are planning to retire to "play golf and visit family and friends".

Their house and office is on the market at £249,000 but so far Mrs Farr, 60, and Mr Taylor, 58, have had no serious inquiries and they are worried the business will close.

Mrs Farr said: "If we are forced to end the business I will be devastated. We have built up so many loyal customers and friends it will be sad if the business closes."

Many post offices close through lack of business but, according to Mr Taylor, Radley post office is healthy.

He said: "We have a thriving business here. People come from a wide area and one of the reasons is that we can renew car tax - a facility that many villages post offices do not provide."

The couple run the post office on an agency basis. Five years ago Radley post office was runner-up in a regional Best Post Office competition. It deals only with post office business and greetings cards.

Michael Nutt, who runs the village shop, said he would like to take on the post office but could not afford to buy the business. He said: "It is a struggle running a small village shop. We make a living but survive on a day-by-day basis."

Post Office spokesman Mike Dalton said: "We would like to see the post office in Radley continue and we are prepared to speak to anyone who is interested in continuing the business."
