Banbury's Duncan Vercoe bounced back to race-winning form with victory in the fifth round of the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup for his Mardi Gras Motorsport team on home ground at Silverstone.

The 27-year-old led every lap to take his second win of the season and get his title hopes back on track after he lost his championship lead with two disastrous rounds at Oulton Park two weeks earlier.

Vercoe later described the night race - held in the dark and in rain which made track conditions increasingly slippery - as one of the hardest of his life. He said: "The level of concentration required to keep the car on the track was immense.

"I managed to build a small gap to the others, but they were never far away so I had to keep pushing hard. I almost lost control on the final lap, but luckily it came back and I got away with it. Seeing the chequered flag was a big relief."
