High standards have been set by an array of local talent at Charlbury's summer festival.

That's the verdict of the organisers of the month-long celebration which finishes this weekend.

More than 20 events, including all forms of music, dancing, drama, film, poetry and craft workshops, have been staged within the town throughout June.

"It's been brilliant," said co-ordinator Kath Lucas.

"And the great thing is the diversity of talent that's been on show, including unusual events like a storytelling session. There has also been great support, with big audiences for several of the events.

"This is the fifth year the festival has been held and it's going from strength to strength."

The celebrations conclude tomorrow with a singing workshop, called International Folk Harmony, held at the Meeting House from 2-5pm.

The festival was kicked off on June 1 by one of the few acts from outside the area, The Baghdaddies, from Newcastle, and featured the popular picnic gathering for the Riverside Festival of live music by the banks of the River Evenlode.

More than 300 people attended an event in the grounds of Ditchley Park, and classical music and readings were performed by local musicians and actor Mike Hadley.

West Oxfordshire District Council's cabinet meeting, next Wednesday, is being recommended to support the festival with a grant of £300.
