Oxford United boss Mark Wright appears to have been foiled in his attempts to sign Swansea goalkeeper Roger Freestone.

Wright, who currently has only one professional keeper on his books in Richard Knight, was also linked with Yeovil stopper Tony Pennock, who has since moved to Rushden and Diamonds.

But sources from Swansea say that Oxford made an approach for veteran Welsh international keeper Freestone, although the club have quickly ruled out a move.

Swansea managing director Mike Lewis said: "I have informed both manager and player that I received a phone call from Oxford United, enquiring about Roger's availability.

"The call lasted less than 30 seconds, and it was clear that Oxford's budget would allow them only a derisory offer, which would fall way below Roger's true valuation, should he be for sale, which I must stress, he is not.

"We have no intention of parting with Roger Freestone, who is looking forward to his testimonial season, and beyond, to a possible extended contract."

Swansea's commercial manager Peter Owen told the Oxford Mail: "An enquiry was received from a representative of the Oxford United board.

"We have had enquiries from other clubs, but it has been only 12 months since Roger Freestone signed a new contract with the club.

"The query was received, but not entertained."

Wright and assistant boss Ted McMinn were unavailable for comment.
