People living in the Chilterns want to keep their village shops and post offices, cut heavy traffic, have more buses and support green farming, according to a recent survey.

They also want new houses to fit into the landscape, proper management of woodlands, and protection of village greens and open spaces.

Although only 800 people responded to the 15,000 questionnaires distributed, the organisers said that was reasonable, and the comments would be used to draw up a management plan for the area of outstanding natural beauty

The survey showed people want to conserve traditional features like ponds and hedgerows, oppose too many road signs and street lights, and are strongly against the spread of golf courses.
