Army cadets are preparing to tackle one of the world's tallest mountains by training at an Oxford sports centre.

Members of the Oxford University Officers Training Corps are planning an expedition to the 7,000m summit of Acon Cagua in the Andes in South America.

They have been practising their climbing skills closer to home, at Oxford Brookes University sports centre.

Cadets from Oxford and Oxford Brookes universities and the Royal Military College at Shrivenham, near Faringdon, who make up the corps, are hoping to be selected for the 20-strong team. Those chosen will fly out to Argentina in March 2003.
