Great-grandmother Eva Jeffrey will spend her 100th birthday in hospital after she fell and broke her leg.

But the bells of her village church in Horspath, near Oxford, will ring out and Mrs Jeffrey, who has lived in Horspath for 60 years, will still be able to hear them.

Her daughter, Beryl Tewell, 73, said: "The bells will be rung for her at 10.30am.

"We will have a mobile phone at the church and make sure the hospital phone is free so she can hear them."

Doctors at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford, fixed her leg with a metal pin but she is expected to require hospital care for several more weeks.

Mrs Tewell added: "We are having a birthday party for friends and family on Sunday afternoon.

"Her grandson, Jeffrey, is travelling from America."

Mrs Jeffrey grew up in Drayton, near Abingdon.

She has two surviving children, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
