Jaguar is launching its most powerful saloon with the first performance version of the S-Type.

The mighty S-Type R model, powered by a 400 horsepower 4.3-litre V8 engine, will be a new flagship model for the S-Type range.

The range is also being expanded at the lower end, with three 2.5-litre models, the least expensive of which will take to the road for less than £25,000.

Jaguar says all variants on the eight-strong range feature a completely redesigned interior, which blends traditional luxury and craftsmanship with advanced technology, including optional touch-screen telematics displays and class-leading occupant safety systems.

A new six-speed ZF automatic transmission -- an industry first in the executive segment -- is available across the new S-Type range, matching the refined power delivery of the new Jaguar 2.5 AJ-V6 engine developing 201 horsepower and larger capacity 4.2 AJ-V8.

The new refined 4.2-litre engine is available in both 300 horsepower (normally aspirated) and 400 horsepower (supercharged) forms.

Jaguar says the new front suspension and extensively revised rear suspension deliver outstanding ride comfort with poised, agile handling, in keeping with the Jaguar tradition.

The S-Type's launch in 1999 marked the beginning of a major product-led transformation for Jaguar. Following the launch, the company's worldwide sales virtually doubled and S-Type sales to date have exceeded 135,000 cars.

Mike Beasley, managing director, said: "Building on the success of the S-Type, we have refined and developed the range to appeal to an even wider market and to strengthen our position as one of the leading players in the premium saloon segment.

"Reaffirming Jaguar's core marque values of distinctive style, refined power, agile handling, supple ride and luxurious comfort, the new S-Type is even better equipped and more accessible than ever, with a choice of engines and specifications to suit individual tastes and budgets."
