Memory training gave David Morgan the idea for his Easiread system for parents to help their children learn to read.

"It all worked by turning lists into something visual. For instance, my sister-in-law's house number is 12, and I thought of 12 eggs thrown over the front door," he said.

Mr Morgan started helping his son Oscar to remember alphabet letters by giving him a visual clue -- the letter S, for instance, had a snake curled around it.

The former Army tank commander has tested the system at two first schools in Oxford and is set to market it. He will run a session at the Oxford Literacy Festival at the Oxford Union on March 17.
