A car share scheme could make life easier for residents in east Oxford.

CARvenience already operates in north Oxford, after Oxford City Council joined forces with car hire firm Avis last year.

Avis supplies the vehicles on behalf of the city council and members of the scheme can rent them by the hour or by the day.

In north Oxford, members take and return vehicles from three designated parking bays, and pay only a small mileage fee, which includes the cost of fuel.

The scheme aims to reduce the number of cars on the road by getting people to share rented vehicles.

The council's East Area Parliament has agreed to invite Avis to its next meeting to present the benefits of the scheme to residents in the area. Parliament chairman Elise Benjamin said Avis should be invited to present its scheme, despite reservations from some councillors.

County councillor Craig Simmons, a non-voting member, said he had tried to set up a similar scheme in St Clement's and, although it was not well used, he thought it would be a good idea to consult with Avis about an east Oxford scheme.

Speaking as a resident at the meeting, the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Cllr Peter Moss, said: "Surely this is something that would be very much welcomed in Oxford.

"Just to get information would be valuable so that people can see if it is viable."
