Vandals broke into the construction site of the new leisure centre in Chipping Norton and damaged tiles in the swimming pool tank and put graffiti on the walls.

The centre, being built by West Oxfordshire District Council on land at Chipping Norton School, is due to open next month.

The council's cabinet member for leisure, Cllr Louise Chapman, said: "We are saddened by this act of wilful vandalism to public property. Residents from Chipping Norton and the surrounding area are eagerly looking forward to this much awaited new facility.

"Council staff and contractors have been working hard to make sure this centre is completed on schedule, and we hope that, on this occasion, it will not result in any delay in opening. Any further vandalism could cause setbacks".

Anyone with information on the vandalism, which took place at the weekend, is urged to contact police on 01608 648715.

Just before Christmas, vandals caused £5,000 damage to the outdoor swimming pool in the town.
