A pub is vowing to change its name permanently in honour of England football coach Sven Goran Eriksson if the team wins the World Cup.

The Fitzharris Arms in Abingdon-- temporarily being called the Sven Goran Eriks Inn for the World Cup

At the moment, the Fitzharris Arms in Wootton Road, Abingdon, is the Sven Goran Eriks Inn only for the duration of the tournament.

But following the euphoria that followed last Friday's victory over Argentina, Allan Hymers, operations manager for the pub's owner, Morrells, said: "This was a great victory. "Now we've got the confidence to go all the way, and if England win the World Cup then this pub will rename itself.

"New world champions and the coach would deserve an English pub to be named after him."

The name change at the pub attracted national and international media attention.

More than 200 people crowded into the pub to watch the match against Argentina on several television sets, including a big screen in the main bar, which was decorated with a net and penalty area.

A Dutch television crew filed a report from the pub, describing the atmosphere as "wonderful" and the supporters as sympathetic towards the Dutch, who had failed to qualify.
