An Oxfordshire primary school has won a School Achievement Award for good performance.

As a result, the John Blandy School, in Southmoor, moves into the top 33 per cent of schools in the country.

The principal adviser for schools at Oxfordshire County Council, Richard Howard, said: "This award is richly deserved because the school has performed consistently well. The improvement in pupils' results at key stage two was much better than has been achieved by similar schools nationally." The school will receive £2,930, which will be shared equally between the teaching and support staff. The award is part of a Government scheme to recognise and reward excellent teaching and improved performance.

John Blandy educates 170 boys and girls from Southmoor, Kingstone Bagpuize and surrounding villages. It also runs a thriving nursery.

The headteacher, Christopher Spring, said: "I'm very pleased with this award because it recognises the skills of our staff. There's more to schools than exam results and I'm very pleased that we're also improving in music, art and sport."
