Wantage Fire Station needs to recruit more retained firefighters if it is going to be able to continue responding to emergency calls around the clock.

The fire station is manned 24 hours a day, but station sub officer Tony Whiting said the level of cover may drop if more recruits do not come forward.

Mr Whiting said: "At the moment, we are able to man the station 24 hours a day, simply due to the amount of hours everyone has been putting in."

The station is looking to take on another four to five people.

Retained firefighters are fully trained and carry bleepers to alert them to emergency calls. Some provide 24-hour a day cover with their employers' permission, while others are on call when they are not at work.

To become a retained firefighter, you must live within a mile and a half of the fire station, be reasonably fit and aged over 18. For an information pack, call 0800 5870870.
