Oxford East MP Andrew Smith has opened a long-awaited youth centre on the city's Wood Farm estate.
The £30,000 centre, in Titup Hall Lane, was made possible thanks to financial help from Unipart, of Cowley, and the residents' campaigns against vandalism and car thieves.
New facilities for young people include computers, music equipment, a coffee bar and kitchen, and a games and TV area.
Two part-time youth workers will oversee activities at the centre.
Ron Mansfield, project engineer at Unipart, said: "Local support has been unwavering. This is a great start. We can use this building as a base to attract more investment into the area." Richard Bryant, who led the residents' campaign, said: "This is a testament to the people in this community who refuse to give up."
Wood Farm tenants' and residents' assocation decided to build a youth centre nine years ago. It set up the Wood Farm Youth Campaign Group to raise the £30,000 needed to build the centre.
