One hundred jobs could be created in Wallingford if an international environmental and medical firm goes through with plans to relocate to the town.

CAB International's director general, Dr Denis Blight, detailed the plans to Wallingford Town Council at a meeting last week.

Councillors welcomed Dr Blight's talk which gave them details of proposals to centralise all of the firm's activities in Wallingford.

Formal plans have not yet been submitted.

Councillor Richard Wooldridge said: "I hope you can put down good roots in Wallingford, it would be great for the town."

Dr Blight is head of CAB International, which was formerly known as the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau. The firm has an annual turnover of about £20m. CABI Publishing is based on the outskirts of Wallingford and employs about 150 people.

The company has other premises in Surrey where 100 people are employed.

If the relocation plans are successful all 250 workers will be at the same premises in the town.

CABI deals with issues like malaria research and development, Japanese Knotweed control and pest management in China, Pakistan, India and other countries.

Its bioscience collection has more than 400,000 dried or preserved specimens and more than 21,000 living specimens of fungi, bacteria and nematode worms.
