The streets of Oxford were virtually deserted on Saturday afternoon, but the pubs were overflowing.

England's three-nil demolition of Denmark in their World Cup second round match was greeted with jubilant celebrations across the city. People danced in the streets and tooted their car horns in celebration.

The city's shops had a day with only a few hours of trade.

Susan Gould, of Debenhams, said: "While the match was on we were really quiet but afterwards everybody came out to do their shopping, and we were busy later on in the afternoon."

England fan, Paul O'Keeffe, a building site manager from Oxford, watched the match at the City Arms, Cowley Road, Oxford. He said: "It was a wonderful, wonderful day for English football. Besides being at the match the atmosphere couldn't get much better. Beer was flying everywhere each time a goal went in, and at the final whistle."

The excellent way in which the England fans have conducted themselves in Japan was mirrored in Oxford, with fans causing no trouble.

A police spokesman said: "We were absolutely amazed at the total lack of football-related incidents.

"Following the match it was very quiet.

"There were a few of the usual Friday night calls, but none specifically football-related."
