More than 15,000 people congregated in east Oxford yesterday for a colourful cultural celebration.

Josh Hume, nine, among the flags at Cowley Road Carnival The Cowley Road Carnival, sponsored by the Oxford Mail, included a 300-strong, rainbow-themed procession along the main road.

The event ran from noon until 7pm celebrating the ethnic communities of east Oxford, bringing together Indian, Pakistani, Afro-Caribbean and British cultures.

The procession included schoolchildren, community group members and musicians on foot, bicycle, scooter and floats. It went along Cowley Road to The Plain, then through St Clement's, Morrell Avenue and Union Street.

Joining in was the Rinky Dink mobile bicycle sound system, which is activated by pedal power. Local DJs, live bands and entertainers entertained the crowds on and around two stages at Manzil Gardens and the Asian Cultural Centre, Manzil Way.

Oxford reggae band Makating, West Indian steel band Bravo Bravo, and drumming and bagpipes outfit The G's were among the bands performing at Manzil Gardens.

Barathanatyam, Russian and Middle Eastern dancers gave their own cultural flavour to the day and traditional Indian and Asian pop music was played.

The Kids' Trail offered activities and entertainment for children under 10 from 11am, including the East Oxford School Fair in Union Street. SS Mary and John Church in Cowley Road opened its tower to offer a spectacular bird's-eye view of the carnival. A children's area at Manzil Way included a bouncy castle, magic and balloon sculptures and workshops.

Andy Davice, East Oxford Action information manager, said: "It's a lot bigger this year than last and it's a really colourful but relaxed atmosphere. There has been a big community effort by everybody and the result is a fantastic carnival that they can be proud of."

Carnival-goer Maureen Smith, of Iffley Road, Oxford, said: "We're having a lovely time here.

"Everybody is enjoying themselves and there's loads to do and see. The procession was wonderful and some of the dancing and displays are amazing."
