Traditional music and Hindu gods transformed a Wantage school as pupils immersed themselves in Indian culture.

More than 300 pupils from King Alfred's Community and Sports College took part in India Day.

Pupils chose whether they wanted to focus on music, art, research or dance, and the day culminated with displays and performances of each group's work.

Earthsong, which organised the day, taught pupils about Indian music, while the art group produced displays of Hindu gods, which will go on display at school sites. A third group used reference materials to produce presentations about India's history, geography, culture and food.

Shamita, from Wise Moves Dance Company, helped students produce an Indian dance performance.

Jenny Eastham, co-ordinator of curriculum enrichment at the school, said: "The aim was to give students an awareness of another culture."

India Day will form part of King Alfred's bid for an International Schools Award.

The award recognises a school's awareness of international events and other cultures.
