A woodman has been given an award by the Royal Forestry Society for more than 30 years of service.

Dennis Clifford

Dennis Clifford, 63, works at Bagley Wood, Kennington.

The wood has been owned by St John's College, Oxford, since 1558, three years after the college was founded.

Mr Clifford has been felling and planting trees since 1968.

He was nominated by head forester Philip Dorling, who said: "He planted large areas of woodland in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

"Quite a lot of what you see in Bagley Wood is down to him."

Mr Clifford, who is often seen by dog walkers in the woods, said: "I come from an agricultural community and have always worked in the country and on the land."
