A man has been detained in a psychiatric hospital after he attacked and imprisoned a former girlfriend.

Christopher Cooper, 43, of Falcon Close, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, will be treated at Littlemore Hospital following the attack on Rosemary Mercks-Crockett on May 13.

At Oxford Crown Court on Friday (October 11), he admitted false imprisonment, common assault and affray.

The prosecution said Cooper forced his way into Ms Mercks-Crockett's home, also in Falcon Close, through a window using a hammer.

Cooper hit her about the head, held her by the throat and pushed her onto her bed. He also disconnected the phone.

Neighbours, hearing screams, called police who freed Ms Mercks-Crockett. Cooper, who was found hiding in a garden shed, threatened officers with a screwdriver. They had to spray him with CS gas before they could arrest him.

Ms Mercks-Crockett's ordeal lasted 15 minutes.

Psychiatrist Philip Davison, of Littlemore Hospital, told the court Cooper suffered from a depressive disorder that needed to be assessed and treated.
